Violence at a Beijing Hot Pot

And in Beijing's Fengtai District there has been a forced demolition. This time a popular restaurant was targeted. Please be aware that some of the images in this story are graphic.


STORY:
This isn't the first time Fucheng Beef Hot Pot owner Hsu Shengjun has seen authorities come to her restaurant to have it demolished. But on Monday the 9th it was a very different scene. More than a hundred police showed up to kick Hsu off the property… and things turned violent. Hsu's husband received a severe wound on his neck from police.

[Hsu Shengjun, Hot Pot Owner]:
"The situation was very serious; we rushed to the hospital to rescue my husband.”

Hsu Shengjun's elder sister and 20-plus employees climbed onto the roof to protest.

[Hsu Shengjun, Hot Pot Owner]:
"My sister was pushed from the second floor and her legs were broken. They chased her, chased her and then pushed her down from the roof, they also took my staff to the police station."

One man who lives near the restaurant and knows the owners says the restaurant owners signed a 20 year land use contract with local authorities… but it's only been ten years into the contract and now authorities are trying to kick them off the property.

[Mr. Hu, Lives Nearby]:
"They rented that piece of land, and they also paid for it, and they are also running their business. Everything is legitimate, the authorities do not care whether the Hsus live or die. I cannot even begin to think how this is happening in broad daylight."

This isn't the first time the restaurant has been visited by police. Back in November they also showed up to have the business dismantled.
