Thumbs up if you suspected from the start that Zola was really Medusa. I know I did.
So the gold shield didn't belong to Perseus and Medusa was really guarding it. I guess every story does have two sides.

No, you can't say it's wrong. It's just two different versions of the same story. In one he only looks at her reflection, in the other he makes her see her own reflection. And in the version where she sees her own reflection there's even more variables. Such as, did she turn to stone or did she just die? In one version the shield is of gold, in another it's made of steel and in another it's made of silver. And I'll just stop at that.
