I cross Illinois during a heatwave. I met only one other bicycle tourist on the crossing of Illinois. He was riding 100 miles a day

  • Thanks for the awesome videos of your jouney. I think what you are doing is incredible. I wish I had that kind of dedication/drive! If your path leads into western Nebraska or South Dakota, let me know roughly where/when and I will try my best to meet you for a visit, provided you have time to stop for a bit. It would be great seeing you again, and catching up on old times, even if just for a hour or so. Best of luck on your journey - Dave DeHaai

  • @Elfox2 haha... Dave, thanks again for your generous offer. It would be awesome to hang out with you again. What's it been? 25 years? As a matter of fact, I have changed my routing because of the flooding... I now intend to pass thru your town, and visit several National Parks in SD (and WY). I'll communicate with you on FB and swap contact info) Thanks again young man and hope to see you soon. (BTW... I'm in Ames IA about 12 days ride, if the wind comes from the east.... 8 days:)

  • This may be a stupid question, but I have no experience with this. How does one cycle for a cause? All he is doing is riding his bike so how does he actually raise the money for the cause? I am thinking about giving my bike ride across America next year a cause, but I want it to successfully raise money for the endeavor.

  • @Violinfanatic actually this is an excellent question... there are several things you could do... I've met lots of cyclists who are riding for a cause and the best way is to contact an organisation that deals with your cause, and talk to them and explain your intentions. They will create a paypal account for your ride and then your can display that link on your website, blog, facebook etc or print it on a business card. Other thing you could do is to stop along the way and find places (more)

  • @Violinfanatic ...find place where you could be public.... like talking to local newspapers, radio stations, schools, etc. You could right a blog or create a website, the idea is to generate awareness. You don't nessasarily have to raise money. One of the people I've met were raising money to buy hand-crank bicycles for war veterans who lost legs. These bikes are $3500 dollars, and they have raised enough to buy 2 so far (giveabike(dot)com).
