I slowly opened the door, thankful it didn't make a creaking noise.

"Where have you been?" I heard behind me while I was locking the door. I spun around, my heart beating wildly. "I took Mia to buy her a new coat for the winter," I said, trying my best to sound innocent.

My mother glared at me. "And what was wrong with the one she already has?" she spat. "It was too small for her. But I didn't use any of your money, I promise. I used the money I earned babysitting last week," She studies me for a long time, searching my face for any guiltiness. I kept my face blank. "Fine," she snapped. "Put her to bed and stay out of my sight," I nodded quickly before jogging upstairs and putting Mia into her crib. I looked down at her face and tears welled in my eyes. She was so unsafe living here.

I examined the bruises and scrapes on her tiny arms and wished they were on mine instead. Tears slithered slowly down my face. I caressed her face silently. "I'm sorry for having to live this way," I whispered before walking away from her crib and walking across the hallway to my bedroom. After I closed the door behind me, I quickly pulled my second-hand clothes off and pulling on my sweats. I climbed in my bed quickly and looked at the clock. 11:47pm. I bit my lip and set my alarm for 5am before snuggling under my blanket and slipping into unconsciousness.

When my alarm beeped wildly, I instantly regretted having dinner at Nick's house. I should have stayed home and went to bed at nine like I usually did. I groaned as I rolled out of bed and stumbled my way to the bathroom. I showered quickly and put my hair in a tight side braid. After dressing quickly into my clothes, I tiptoed passed my mother's room and walked into Mia's. She was already awake. I leaned over the crib and smiled at her. She stared up at me with a smile plastered on her tiny face. I picked her up slowly, walked across the room to change her diaper, and put her in a purple shirt with tiny jeans and boots. I carried her down the stairs quietly and jumped when I saw my mother sitting at the kitchen table.

"Good morning, Mom." I said slowly, putting Mia in her high chair and getting her some breakfast. Mom didn't say anything. After pouring myself some stale cereal and placing it on the table, my mother had crossed her arms, forcing my attention.

"Selena," she started. "You have to be home by 3:30 today and the rest of the year." My eyes widened, but I kept my voice even. "What about swim practice and Journalism?" I asked hesitantly.

"That's not my problem. I have a new job which means I won't be home to watch other that," she muttered, nodding her head toward Mia. My eyes swelled with tears. Then an idea popped in my head. "What if I could get someone to watch her? I know someone who would be willing to do it," I paused. "For free,"

I held my breath as she thought over my compromise. "Fine. But you have to take her there and pick her up. Do I make myself clear?" she snapped when I looked down at my cereal. "Yes," I answered, keeping my eyes on her forehead. "Good," she muttered, sliding her chair roughly against the floor, causing it to make an unpleasant screeching noise. Mia moaned. "Shut that thing up," my mother spat, making a disgusted face.

I got up from my seat quickly and soothed Mia before cleaning up the kitchen and heading out the door. I took Mia to Day Care and went to the one person I thought might help me.
