Theatrical trailer for one of the screen's finest science-fiction films, Howard Hawks' THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD (1951), starring Kenneth Tobey, Margaret Sheridan and Robert Cornwaithe. Former editor Christian Nyby received his first directorial credit for the film, although he readily admitted in interviews that Hawks -- for whom Nyby worked as editor on RED RIVER (1948) -- was the film's "guiding hand". Though James Arness played the title creature, it was stuntman Tom Steele who doubled for him in the film's memorable fire scene.

Great, fun movie. I loved this version even though it wasn't as close to the short story as Carpenter's. Also in glorious black and white.

So is this the original "Thing" with a shape-shifting alien, or is it just a coincidence

1:27 and so on is so chessy! John Carpenter really reinvented the movie with his remake which is a true classic.

You have to hand to James Arness. Despite the cheap costume he was in, he had great presence as The Thing.

    Yes, that's actually true (IIRC).

Nonetheless it's also true that Carpenter himself was a fan of this 1951 Hawks film--he even put a clip of it into his own would-be Classic 'Halloween', released in 1978, four years before making his own version of 'The Thing'.

Plainly, not only is John Carpenter a great filmmaker, but he himself also has great taste in film hehehe Plainly much better than that m00ph00 guy(?)down there! hehehe I mean just who is that weird fucker anyway? ??? LOL hehehehehe

Yeah, come to think of it, John Carpenter wanted the remake to be as different as possible from the original. So maybe that's why The Thing could be killed with flames in the 1982 version.

Yeah, well, that's a different movie than this one, or is it? I think it is, yes. So what could be your point?

Heh, you sure you've grown up yet? Maybe more-like you were born last week or like five minutes ago. You don't type like you're nearly old enough to have ever been anywhere near the 1980s, that's for sure.

"Flames cannot destroy The Thing!" well, they sure as hell could in the remake.
