Here's another behind-the-scenes look at some of the work we did for our spectacular "Showbiz" Intermission Clock, which was produced new for drive-in theatres in 2003, and is currently running on screens throughout the US and Canada.
This clip shows what we did to change a live-action announcement snipe from "9 minutes 'til showtime" to "6 minutes 'til showtime". This was the original "clown" intermission series from 1961. We needed to do this because we couldn't use the clip in the nine-minute position; another, longer film was already running over that time slot. And since we didn't have the six-minute announcement from that original clown series, we did a little creative juxtaposition.
While the last shot (closeup) would be relatively easy to change, there is a brief moment just before, when the number "9" can be seen on the clown's parasol. While we considered just leaving that part alone, since the audiences eyes are going to be on the clown anyway, we decided to motion-track over it. It was just for a few frames, and we had already used the technique in several other segments, so we were set up for it.
Turns out we didn't use the segment in the final cut after all, but it *was* produced, and here you'll see it for the first time!
The voiceover in the first version is Wes Bradley. The second version, Jay Cook. It's possible, but unconfirmed, the original live-action segment was directed by Ralph Papin.
This will be in the Extras for a planned DVD release.
