Westlands water district and the Bureau of Reclamation have proposed an 18 foot raise of the average water level of the Shasta Reservoir in Northern California. Over 50 sacred and historical sites of the Winnemem Wintu, an indigenous society of the McCloud River Basin, will be either seasonally or permanently flooded or otherwise affected. Lyla Johnston, a Stanford Researcher, explains her experience in working with the tribe for an anthropology report on the potential cultural impacts of the Shasta Dam raise.
