Any type of permanent magnet motor will do this (not sure about all brushless ones). It's nice to be able to slow your motor down in the event of high winds.
I had a switch on my boat that I could disconnect the gen from the battery and then short the two together and stop it

Nice generator. I have noticed mine will slow down when shorted too with a 3pst switch. If I added a ground wire to my switch would it brake even better, or is that a bad idea or (c) none of the above.

@bearhamo I'm not sure there is a bad way to do it. If it works, great. Just as long as you don't short out the battery. :-)

how much force will be needed to turn when it is shorted out. I guess what i am asking is what kinda winds will still hold it in place

It will turn in any wind, just very slowly. It's like dragging your hand through water; takes almost no effort to go slowly, but a lot of effort to go quickly. So it is not a "brake" per-se; more like friction.
