M. Ward makes beautiful music. I hate when people reference everything creative to drugs, whether that's what it's about or not.

he says,"the last time i run away, well i hope it is with you

will you let me show you where to run?(by the waterfall)" meaning he hopes his love will follow him to the waterfall ( follow him into heaven afterlife whatever happens after death). he dies and hopes that one day his love will be there to join him in death. that is what i perceive the video and the lyrics to be about. i could be wrong, but this is what i think it is about.

the first time he ran away was as a child. he saw things as he was running away from his parents but returned to them like most children do when they run away. the second time he ran away he ran into war. he left his family and in return he saw bloodshed,loss, and lots of pain. when he got back from war he had changed. people looked at him differently and acted differently around him. carefully almost. the last time he runs away is when he is old and gray.
