Footage we took and media footage of the Old General Hospital implosion, in Saint John, New Brunswick. I worked in the vacated hospital building from 1983-1985 for the Jeux Canada Games '85. It housed our offices on the main level and the upper levels were used for the Athletes Village. Our sewing department was located on the 7th Floor and all the uniforms for the 5,000 Games' volunteers and 120 staff members were made there. Haunted Mary was on the 8th floor; I always hated when the elevator would bypass the 7th and go straight to the 8th. The Nurses' Residence was also used to house the Chefs de Mission and other officials. The Commissionaires loved to tell us about their encounters with the haunted portion of the underground pedway that led between the Nurses' Residence and the main hospital buildings.
If you ever travel across the viaduct towards the North end, you will see the dome from the Hospital there. Our General Manager, the Late George T. Fraser, insisted we would fly the largest Canadian Flag in the City of Saint John from that vantage point and hired a helicopter to mount the flagpole. He was a proud Canadian and followed military protocol, ensuring the flag was never ripped and always lighted at night.
The day the hospital was imploded was a sad day for me; it signalled the end of an era and the best job I've ever had; working with incredible people who had the best interests of Saint John at heart.
