There are only around 1,700 Greater Asian one-horned rhinos left in the world. In February 2008, a one-and-a-half year-old female rhino calf was successfully rehabilitated and relocated to Manas National Park. The park was once home to a large population of rhinos that were all killed during armed conflicts in the region. The International Fund for Animal Welfare and partner organization Wildlife Trust of India, together with the Assam State Forest Department, are working together to repopulate Manas with the abundant wildlife it once had. This calf is only the fourth rhino in the park following 3 others moved by IFAW and WTI in the last two years.
