A 3-micron particle is trapped with an infrared laser beam, and oscillated through a liquid medium. This technique has practical applications in determining the local viscosity (and/or elasticity) in a macroscopic sample, and measuring forces between colloidal bodies (i.e., particles, biological cells, et cetera...)
