The word tithe literally means a tenth. Is that what Christians are called to give, or is there to be a different criteria for our giving? Pastor Mark Driscoll teaches about tithing, what it means and what Christians should give in this clip from Doctrine: What Christians Should Believe.

  • Many of you guys like to bash Driscoll just because he is too honest. Nothing he says is unbiblical at all. Don't be deceived into thinking that God doesn't want us to sacrifice out of our abundance to him. The fact that people are offended by this shows that are hearts are corrupted. Like he says is an issue of worship. If we truly loved God we would have no problem giving 10%, 25%, or all of what we have if that's what he asks of us.

  • @Grandmastu hey just curious. There were 613 OT laws, how come you select ONE from among them - and ignore the other 612?

  • @zwreckless1 I agree. I think that paying tithes to the church/pastor is a way of laying the burden of taking care of the poor on the pastor. As long as we pay our tithes we are doing our part, so we are no longer obligated to have to go on the streets and actually MINISTER HANDS ON. we don't have to go and actually feed the poor with the Word of God and with natural food. Christians have become LAZY, wanting to work for money, but not work for the sake of SOULS.

  • As children of God we are now a ROYAL PRIESTHOOD, with Jesus Christ being High Priest. So, if the tithe was suppose to go to the PRIESTS, then I should be setting aside the ten% of my income for myself or I give u 10% and u give me 10%, but I definately don't HAVE TO give 10% of my income to a pastor or to a church. However, if God places it in my heart to give something then I will. We must be led by the Spirit not by doctrines of men that nullify the Word of God.

  • If some1 insists that we are still under the law of tithing and quotes old testament passages as proof, then I will have to say READ the Scriptures again. if we are to tithe, then we must of course look to the old test. to see how to tith becus tithing is NOT mentioned in the new test. so, in the old it says that the PRIESTS were to receive the tithe. Interesting becus the New Test. says that all children of God are now PRIESTS!!!! it NEVER says that ONLY PASTORS are priests, but ALL are.

  • I agree with you with grandmastu. It's either we are still under the law or we are under grace. I mean really which one is it? under the old cov. the tithes were ONLY supose to go to the LEVITES. we are NO LONGER under the levitical order. Also, the command of tithing is NEVER mentioned in the new test. Paul only says to give whatever you can out of whatever you have. He mentions NOTHING about HAVING to give 10% every pay check you get.

  • We all are unable to give apart from handing over our responsibility to do so ? I think clearly some people like the whole concept .it allows them to wash their hands of some things .They have to do it blindly .Is your church saying I'll build bigger barns to put what we have in ?? Jesus preached on a hillside . We still have streets for men to preach in .

  • The tithe according to most is a way to fund...giving to the poor .I never understood how people are so proud of themselves paying a tithe to a church hoping somehow it will go to a poor person .Isn't it true that something else will get in the way and need paid apart from a hungry person .why are you making your pastor be a good steward with your money ? Has anyone ever been a good steward with money just handed to them ? Work for it and you'll be a good steward of money .inheritances are blown

  • Tithing was NEVER meant for new covenant Gentiles. In fact, Tithing was never for the Gentiles. Jesus teaches "giving with a generous heart, what your heart has decided to give" WE DON'T HAVE TO TITHE!!!! TITHING KEEPS YOU UNDER THE LAW. The bible teaches if you keep one part of the law you have to keep all of it otherwise you will be under the curse. Be free, give freely as your heart desires and God will bless you with the measure you give. Give free child of God with a cheerful heart! Be free

  • @andyguitargloucester haha good point man... if preachers are intent on recieving tithes then they should at least be forbidden to own property of any kind and be subject to the same laws and regulations that governed Levite priests. They want it both ways though.. they want your cash and then they want to cash in on everything around them!

  • So "we don't teach tithing"; but by the time we finish preaching about new covenant giving, you'll wish we did. The OT tithe should not be used as a fulcrum to apply the lever of guilt so that God's sheep contribute more than 10%. Then again, mega-churches run up mega-bills for mega-ministry based on mega-personalities like Driscoll. That's a far cry from the mega-poverty practiced by Christ and his apostles who spread the gospel w/o the internet, hair-gel, or dressing like Tim Hawkins.

  • @andyguitargloucester your points about the true biblical tithe is correct, I wish more Christians would wake up and see the truth.

  • @etherform66 agread

  • @andyguitargloucester hurray some one who gets it

  • remember that the tithe went only to the levite. Are the pastors in america levites? NO!. can you answer why it is tha tjews who follow the law do not tithe?

  • No -- the problem with Driscoll is that he is WRONG:

    ▪ At 0:30 he says the "tithe" was "a 10th of the gross" that went to "Levites, pastors and priests in the Old Testament to fund ministry". That is a LIE.

    ▪ The primary tithe was a 10th of produce given YEARLY by the people to the Levites, who functioned not only as temple attendants, but as teachers and civil servants. There were no "pastors" anywhere around.

This video shows why I don't like Driscoll. He talks TOO much and TOO fast.

  • What Mark has failed to note is that tithing was only required of food producers. Other occupations in Israel did not tithe. The tithe was not voluntary, and was taken as a tax. Christians do not just give 3 or 4% as he misleadingly suggests, but also pay taxes. Some of this goes to the poor in welfare payments. Tithes were given to the priests but the priests were forbidden to own property. In the New Testament St Paul was unpaid. No one put up church buildings. No large salaries for preachers.

  • I'd really love to know how this pastor actually hands over the tithes to the Lord. Or is he just another greedy Creflo wannabe making 1 annual salary per 10 punters on the pews? Please do not insult our intelligence. I bet there is not any cash distributed to the poorest members of the congregation / parish either which was the original idea.

  • Jesus needs a jet folks, you better tithe. This aint no synagogue!

  • Tithing is always compulsory. I like how Mark confuses giving with the tithing the Corinthian church did not tithe. They gave money freely but it was not an ongoing thing. Paul states that this is not a commandment for you to do so. Tithing is not in the new covenant. Giving is another matter yes if we have it, and we can give it. We are free from all obligations. God made right with us because we could not. so many Christians live under the old testament welcome to the new testament people.

  • @do2aOnts driscol is no honest! he says "10% of YOUR gross would go to FUND the ministry of priests, pastors etc" ONLY those in primary industries were commanded to tithe - NO ONE ELSE - once a year - NEVER IN MONEY! he says "in addition 10% would go to feasts etc" this occured once every 3 years, not annualy AND WAS FOR THE POOR! 3.3% to the poor is not ADDITIONAL to this, it is the INCLUSIVE percentage of the 3 tithes (Num18, Det14, Det26) - his intention is to confuse ignorant people

  • @do2aOnts The fact that people are offended by this shows that they see the folly of the argument: Give God the money you yourself earn? God, as German philosopher Max Stirner observed, is nothing but an egoist. Why is egoism so detestable in humanity but so admirable in God? Me, I follow Stirner's example: "Let me then likewise concern myself for myself, who am equally with God the nothing of all others, who am my all, who am the only one."

  • @aubhar dude thats what he said... give what the Lord puts on your heart whether its 2 cents or all that you have... Jesus has told someone before to give all that he had and he could do it to you or me. would you listen if he did? thats a tough question but there was a time I gave my last 100$ that was suppose to use to buy food for my family but I obeyed and I admit it was hard to walk by faith like that but long story short my cabinets were overflowing few days later from unknown sources

  • you give what the Lord puts on your heart, so If he tells you to sell all and give it to the poor like he told someone before then you should do it. I personally don't have percent that I give but when he lays something on my heart I do it. but we are all called to help one another in someway, shape, or form. last number I seen is like 70% of people on Earth lives off less then $2 a day. so even the poorest in America is filthy rich compared to others in the world. lets all do our part and help.
