I'm not sure what the best way to do that would be. I suppose you could have a mesh emitter of some sort but to be honest even the particle system on this is more or less wasted resources.

would have been nice to see some realistic lava bubbles here, everyone is doing flat lava :(

So you just layed down some of the base colors (the blacks and oranges/yellows), ran some filters and made it tile-able?
I too am trying to make a lava material like this though I can't figure out a way to approach the diffuse.

From the looks of the texture it's just the render > clouds filter with something done to make it more clumpy.

how did you go about creating your diffuse? Or is it photo sourced?

I just played with filters and stuff in Photoshop, though I can't remember which unfortunately.

That's awesome!!!, could you post up an image of the material? like how you set it up?

It's basically a fairly straightforward material with a diffuse, specular and an emissive map that all pan together. Then in addition to that there's a second emissive map which pans the other way to give a second layer of brightness to it (you can just about see shadows moving the opposite direction to the lava flow). Just for extra fun there's a fresnel tied into the emissive channel aswell so if you look down into the lava it's brighter than it is in the distance. There's a fog plane too.
