Marcia Funebre Sulla Morta d'un Papagallo - Charles Valentin Morhange Alkan

Featured in the now discontinued Alkan: A Synposium CD
Conducted by Ronald Smith

One Alkan's more humourous works, Funeral March on the Death of a Parrot is said to be satire on the romantic opera composer Rossini, who had an affinity for parrots.

Libretto:
"As-tu déjeuné, Jaco?"
"Et de quoi?"
"Ah!"

Have you eaten, Jaco?
And what?
Ah!!

  • Yes this is a great piece of music and characteristic of the composer's most intelligent writing. It's also very valuable as one of the few examples of Alkan's ensemble/orchestral writing. It was conducted by Mark Fitzgerald though, not Ronald Smith. If only we could find his B minor Symphony!

    Thanks for posting!

  • Lol! I need to find some musicians and make them learn this/sing it! This goes to prove that Alkan was actually a very warm and humorous man!

  • Which of the 3 recordings is it from the "A Synposium CD Conducted by Ronald Smith"?

  • was this parrot an emperor to deserve even a funeral march?

  • AW HOW CUTE!

  • @4candles I can't even imagine what the B minor Symphony would sound like. I just know It'll be incredible.

  • who performed this one?

  • Wow Alkan just made my day! I have currently a major depression and have been meditating the entire night, then I went here! Oh man, just that approach to life of his, just like the fact that all his other works are called etudes, even the symphony. Nothing is serious. So mindblowing!

  • Yes this piece lead to the rediscovery of Alkan, when Alfred Hitchcock was looking for a theme for his TV show ( he ended up with the March of the Marionettes) Ronald Smith and Raymond Lowenthal caught on very fast and got the ball rolling, Hamelin and Ogdon put things in overdrive.. See the truly great

lectures here by Raymond Lowenthal all 20 parts to grasp Alkan in full..

Alkan puts others like Sorabji and Scriabin into better perspective.

Ahead of his time!! Almost forgotten !

  • Reminds one of PDQ Bach's Iphigenia in Brooklyn.

  • I reckon Alkan would've loved Monty Python
