This short clip from the celebrated movie show a woman character watching a Judo fight while space traveling. Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke were extremely careful with every detail on this movie. Every single thing was done deliberately. They certainly thought that Judo would have an important place in the "future" society they devised for the seminal movie. And the choice of Judo is also very logical: Judo promotes combat without resorting to violence, and, as such, was and still is very suited as a humanistic combat sport, and Clarke always promoted humanistic senarios.
There is a theory of judo technique is same as spinning the bucket of water and the water will not spill out.
This theory show very well in this movie.
