@mythoughtfulchannel With respect I say forget the ambition angle....they played musicians' "clever-dickery" music & NOT populist dross. Regrettably it's ALWAYS been the same:~ 3 chord tricks sell! Even Beethoven learned that! Forget quality if you wanna get rich. It's not that the public ARE fickle, it's that they KNOW fick-all & just want a tune they can hum! I've been a musopro most of my life & I've NEVER found reason to disagree with the foregoing totally UN- original observation!!
Saw them at Aberdeen University Union in 1974. Fantastic concert. Rushed out and bought the first two albums. Got the posters of the Roger Dean covers on my wall, and badgered the record shop for the poster advert for "Spyglass Guest" when that came out. Saw ELP in Dundee a year or so earlier and Genesis doing "The Lamb" in Edinburgh not long after. Happy days :-)
Maybe the lacked a front man? No frontman, no guitarplayer, just two obscure guys hiding behing the keys. A person with charisma up front means a lot. Musically they were good enough.
Dear oh dear, memories of The Greyhound in Croydon where they seemed to play each week! And of Time and Tide with the album cover corner chopped off. I think that meant it was some kind of illegal import bought from a bloke in kaftan outside!
