This 8 minute movie (without sound for copyright reasons) shows the creation of the Menger Sponge - a giant 3D fractal - with Clics, a construction toy for Kids. It took about 18000 pieces, and was built in March 2007 at the city hall of Mons, Belgium as part of the "Printemps des Sciences" science festival. The construction was coordinated by Tom Mens and various members of the Institut d'Informatique of the University of Mons-Hainaut. The video was produced by Pierre Meurisse.

  • I would have loved to hear the audio for this. Especially any frustrated comments or swears :0)

Those plastic pieces look like they would start to hurt your fingers after pressing them into place so many times.

  • In fact there was no swearing and my hands or fingers did not hurt when it was finished.

  • heh, & that is just 1 or like... 19 more cubes to make the next step.

  • 20 more cubes for each next iteration to be precise... (For the current version of the fractal, we required roughly 18000 pieces to construct the whole thing, figure out how much would be needed for one more iteration...)

  • This is really cool!

  • The construction pieces used to build this fractal project look like a cross between Legos & jigsaw puzzle pieces.

  • Goodness, it's amazing how well it fitted in the back of that car in the last shot. xD

  • make an 64 million cube

  • Nice screensaver at 4:30 =D

  • i bet that cost a lot of money
