Each gospel is a collage of different recollections written down not by eyewitnesses but by people at least one generation after his death. We don't even know who were the true authors. The apostle Matthew didn't write the Gospel of Matthew; the apostle John didn't write the Gospel of John, and so forth. Whoever wrote these gospels (only four out of dozens others that were written but many of which never survived). Church fathers simply "assigned" each of the accepted gospels to John, Luke, etc
