I have had the "Tape From California" LP forever and this was my favourite cut. He was always under-rated, I could never get people to listen to this album. I think he'd be better appreciated today, actually. It is poetry; it is genius. I must get a turntable! Thanks for posting this!!!

Brilliant, depressing, exhilarating, exhausting. This amazing song is Phil Ochs in a nutshell.

Such a tragic loss. I'd think the murder of his friend in Chile by Pinochets fascists put him on the very edge of wanting to continue. The most sensitive and insightful are the ones who are hardest put to merely survive.

How I remember this piece of art, have no idea what happened to my LP with this on it.

@j6460887 I agree this one is amongst his very best....however since he was such a prolific writer thankfully there are several other 'masterpieces' out there from Phil.

Thanks for Posting This GEM.... Phil was so deep and such amazing works flowed from his genius.

it's a little to meandering feverishly stretching for a Dylan and not a strong enough melody at times and lyrically funny but maybe that is intentional and so I say Bracero I mean Well-done bravo ?? Sometimes it just knocks your socks off. But to say this is a masterpiece is nuts. The hammer was hard in the chrome of the car then we took off in a spin .. great line .. and all the highborn ladies sing Lou Reed's walk on the wild side.

This is one of Phil's most moving songs next to "Changes". It is just such a moving song.

Phil wrote many great songs, but this is his masterpiece
This is great. I recently picked up the "Tape from California" LP lying around a friend's house and this song stood out.
Thanks for posting the video!

Ya, it does stand out. There are some other good songs on that album aswell (foremost; the war is over) but this one makes the album.
