Although they were initially grouped with the legions of pop-metal bands that dominated the American heavy metal scene of the '80s, Queensrÿche were one of the most distinctive bands of the era. Where their contemporaries built on the legacy of Van Halen, Aerosmith, and Kiss, Queensrÿche constructed a progressive form of heavy metal that drew equally from the guitar pyrotechnics of post-Van Halen metal and '70s art rock, most notably Pink Floyd and Queen. After releasing a handful of ignored albums, the band began to break into the mainstream with the acclaimed 1988 album Operation: Mindcrime. Its follow-up, Empire, was the group's biggest success, selling over two million copies due to the hit single "Silent Lucidity." Queensrÿche never sustained that widespread popularity -- like most late-'80s metal bands, their audience disappeared after the emergence of grunge. Nevertheless, they retained a large cult following well into the ensuing decades.

You've got a cardboard house.
Live there all the time.
Keep your memories tied with string
The face that many once-adored,
twenty years gone maybe more.
Somewhere you lost your dream.
Mama watched your every move,
but now you're all alone.
She's been gone for awhile.
Daddy left some time ago,
fading years pass too slow.
He's the only one, could make you smile.

--oh, you're still crying--

Big city bound.
Gonna make your mark.
Read your name in the lights.
All the ads and people say,
beauty lets you get your way.
Tried your best to prove them right.
But living on the streets ain't bad,
sad people make you glad.
Pardon me, could you spare some change?

--oh, you're still crying--

Street corner girl.
Watch the crowd go by,
fill your tin can with life.
Summer days tend to slip away
like your men you couldn't make them stay.
Hard to choose, whiskey or a wife.
Sometimes you wonder where's the end.
Where you goin' where you been?
Happiness seems so hard to win.
Most never care to find,
Della Brown sees it all the time.
Looking for that man
to make her smile again.

  • Mass media has robbed the youth of today of this kind of talent. I'm so glad I was born in the 70's. I am teaching my children to seek out talent and not be controlled by what they see on tv and the internet. Be free in your mind and live a life that becomes you. Corporate greed has most of the world thinking they will be a better person if they own their products. Take a look at yourself and find out what you "Need" not what you "Want". Your kids future depends on it.

  • I love the fade out solo. I can listen to it over and over. OMG sooo good.

  • @Skython11 That is awesome! It's is to know that more and more youth are getting into music that is not spoon feed to them. Reach out and search for music that stirs the soul. You will be surprised by what you find! As far as using Geoff Tate's vocal style as a role model. I think you have your work cut out for you! Post something for us to jam on! Peace!

  • @stimeeee You didn't need to teach me that. But the rest of the youth? ... Oh dear... I also don't like Pop, I understand what makes a band good. I hope to follow, but I don't see it happening. I was actually showed Queensrÿche by my brother. Who is 3 years older than I am. I'm 16. I'm a vocalist who is using Geoff Tate as a Role Model.

  • @stimeeee My mom did this as well, in sixth grade, I was becoming a... well, a wigger, and I was trying to fit in with the crowd, it took me getting into a lot of trouble, and getting home schooled to rediscover myself. Best decision I've ever made...

  • I sang this at Karaoke a week ago and nailed it, because Geoff didn't limit his range to operatic all of the time. Thank you Geoff!!!

  • pure genius this song

  • The bass tone. Man.

  • Eddie Jackson is just too cool man.

  • @ShafTdom47 You should always find out for yourself what kind of music, movies, books you like. Never succumb to mass media or corporate greed. Keep searching for outside influences. Keep your mind free of all the clutter, and keep rocking of course!

  • @stimeeee most wise words my friend, you choose your words and path very carefully. very cool !!!!!!
