Great job, my dear. I'm currently doing a Women in Sport course at Memorial University. We just finished our discussion on how the media portrays women in sport. Thanks for this.
That was the biggest waste of 14 minutes of my life. Well maybe not... I could always use a good laugh. I'm glad my wife wants to be my wife and a mother
Also, if female sports are not taken seriously, it is because, generally, whether we like it or not, men are capable fo doing it bigger, faster, stronger; no-ones fault. But males taking part in sports performed at a lower level, say basketball outside the the top leagues in the world (NBA, Spain, Greece etc.), their performances, however good, as tainted with ''Yeah, but it's not exactly the NBA is it?'' or comments to that effect. Sometimes, it's not just gender, it's level of competition.
Gender stereotypes work both ways. Talking about kids, we see stickers in the back of cars saying 'Prncess on board' for the girls, obviously, she's angelic, beautiful and can do no wrong. The sticker often seen for boys is 'Monkey on board', inferring mischief, misbehaving, and, well, not even human! Sure it's a bit fo fun, but if Disney has it's effect, so does this.
As a woman involved in a male dominated sport (motorsport) I think I can comment and relate to these women depicted in your film (in a sporting context). There are many sports where women and men compete against each other , so if you want to start comparing who is better and how women are portrayed in the sporting world you have to be able to back it up with results. because that is what sport is about, winning. Sex sells, but I bet you also check out the the athletic bodies of men too!
