I only decided to review this game once I realized I had put several hundred hours into it. Been a while since I got sucked into a game like that. Monster Hunter's sense of progression reminds me a lot of MMO games that don't use strict level systems, like Ultima Online or Star Wars Galaxies before the overhaul. Without levels, you tend to focus on specific accomplishments like killing a certain monster or finishing a set of armor.
I find this gives a greater sense of achievement than just informing the player you're now at a higher level. You actively work to becoming a stronger character, and have to use actual experience to better yourself instead of the game just making your guy stronger in exchange for experience points.
The downside of this is the game is incredibly difficult. You need a lot of patience to just scratch the service, a much more to become familiar with everything. It doesn't help it feels like the game actually goes out of it's way to slow you down. Between the lack of vital information and dependence on loot, you're really left to fend for yourself.
At last a review from someone who got past Barroth!!!

It´s nice to see you doing a review again. Can´t really say I´m a fan of the monster hunter series, though..
