SENIOR Liberal Party figures have strongly ruled out any chance of a leadership challenge to Malcolm Turnbull despite a major collapse in his popularity ratings in the wake of the OzCar affair.

Opposition families spokesman Tony Abbott today urged observers to take a cold shower after a Newspoll published in today's edition of The Australian found the proportion of voters satisfied with the Opposition Leader's performance plunged from 44 per cent in a poll conducted between June 12-14 to 25 per cent at the weekend.

In the same period, the Opposition Leader's dissatisfaction rating climbed from 37 per cent to 58 per cent.

The collapse followed Mr Turnbull's failed attempts last week to prove Kevin Rudd gave favoured treatment to an Ipswich car dealer who supplied him with a free utility vehicle. The dealer was seeking information about taxpayer-funded help for car dealers to deal with the credit crunch caused by the global recession.

Mr Turnbull faced heavy Government attack after calling for the Prime Minister's resignation on the basis of an email which turned out to be a forgery.

This morning Mr Abbott said coalition MPs were getting on with their jobs.

No-one was focused on a leadership challenge.

I think people need to take a bit of a cold shower about the polls, Mr Abbott said.

When you've had a tough week you get bad polls. Labor threw everything bar the kitchen sink at us last week, but Malcolm Turnbull has not flinched and the party has not flinched.

Other senior MPs, asking for anonymity, backed Mr Abbott, saying no-one was happy with the poll or last week's events but that most of the party accepted Mr Turnbull would learn from his errors.

They said there was an expectation Mr Turnbull, in only his second term in Parliament, could use a planned frontbench reshuffle to promote seasoned political operators including Mr Abbott.

The MPs also said that the only person being mentioned as a serious alternative leader Sydney MP Joe Hockey was making clear to colleagues that Mr Turnbull should remain leader.
