It's all mostly linear algrebra. Matrix and vector operations. The math is really the easy part though.

Polygons are many-sided shapes.
Quads are four-sided shapes.
In the end, polygons and quads are split into triangles ( 2 triangles make a quad, a few triangles can make any arbitrary convex shape ).

Is that height mapped with a bitmap? If not, huge waste of time making that into a model. Looks like a good start to a game though, but still way way more work to go. And was that made with OpenGL?

Polygons are triangles, quads are squares. well at least thats how most the game industry refers to them, a square is 2 triangles or a quad.
