That seems to be my experience too! If it's on the tip of my tongue, it's better to not bother. It will come to me eventually when I least expect it, which is why I always carry a small pad of paper with me and a pen just in case.

Christopher Walken always goes TOT for me. Then I have to think of names alphabetically until I get to Chris to remember. The trick for me is to do something like word lists instead of spinning the wheels.

well I wish I could just give up on trying to get the word out, but once im asked, i wont be able to forget it unless i get the answer lol

They should study why you often know the first letter - or the general shape of the word

I think it is because we have it "filed" and our memory can go to the location, but not get the exact "address". My psychology teacher explained it that way, as I recall.
