Québec a Nation History (Part 9)

Braddock's Defeat
Braddock expedition
Battle of the Wilderness

On July 9, 1755, Braddock's men crossed the Monongahela without opposition, about ten miles south of Fort Duquesne. The advance guard of 300 Grenadiers and colonials with two cannon under Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Gage began to move ahead, and unexpectedly came upon the French and Indians, who were hurrying to the river. The Battle of the Monongahela, or the Battle of the Wilderness, was officially begun.

  • Several years later said a Indian chief, who participated in the battle, to Washington, "I have traveled a long and weary path that I might see the young warrior of the great battle...I am come to pay homage to the man who is the particular favorite of Heaven, and who can never die in battle." The chief later explained to Washington that he had taken 17 shots at him before he instructed his men to cease fire upon him explaining that he was being protected by the Great Spirit.

  • @Wigidy1313 George Washington deserve respect.

  • All that the French Canadians went though, war, extreme cold etc its a wonder my French Candian ancesters survived it.

  • @tanrat7 notre langue et notre culture ont survécu au Québec.

  • No, you just look too much Pro-English documentary and when you see a neutral documentary you think it is Pro-French. In fact this is a American documentary and you can see a lot of Natives. So I don't see how this is Pro-French why not Pro-Natives. British loose that battle, deal with it...

  • Patriote so basically you guys were fighting for the same cause that the colonists from the British colonists were fighting for.

So in that respect we are alike in that in one way, shape, or form we are all children of immigrants who came to the New World, struggled here, and died here....

  • @MrBillbonkers maybe you should remember that frenchies were ally of George Washington against England. Who care about blood, George Washington had a spirit of freedom, the spirit of an American.

  • Does any one have this battle from the 1984 i think mini series george washington ?, it was from memory really well done, braddock was played by an old james mason. Ive seen a few online dvd copys, but from overseas and im not to sure if i can trust the sites selling them. Surprised none of it is on youtube, it featured a lot of the battles from the american revolution and they were well made

  • In this documentary Braddock looks like a fucking retard.

  • pwnage

  • My ancestor Duncan Cameron was in the advance guard and was shot. He begged Colonel Gage to help him to safety, but they just left him there to fend for himself. He managed to find a hollow tree which he hid in and watched the injuns massacre the wounded.

  • Cool to see this again!, I picked up this DVD set at the Local Library . IDK, despite the rough history between French and English - it's interesting to see that even with different language, different culture/customs, and traditionally different religions (protestant/catholic) - c'est ensemble que nous sommes Canada

(Quebecers have the big advantage though, they are bilingual, the rest of us have to make do with what we learn on Cereal Boxes =S )

  • @Grimgerde Interesting point.

  • @philbox17

No documentary is neutral. It's like trying to find an unbiased newspaper.
