This is the daily noon test of the 1920's-era Sterling Model M siren in Silverton, Oregon. It was originally used to call volunteer firefighters, but today it is only used at noon and occasionally for a multiple-alarm fire. On a clear day it can be heard several miles away.
Due to noise complaints, someone attempted to redirect the sound away from nearby houses by attaching sheet metal tubes between the rotor and intake horn on each side. Since most of the sound comes not from the horns but the ports on the sides of the siren, the modification did little apart from helping the siren to collect rainwater.
