Dealing with Learning:
1. Distinguishing between cultural traditions and actual Islamic teachings
2. Finding sound knowledge
3. Lack of fundamentals (basic belief system, prayer, importance of Quran/Sunnah)
4. Information dump: All at once, different schools of thought, various opinions
5. Lack of starter pack of commonly used Arabic words
6. Unspoken topics: interacting with the opposite gender, bathroom etiquette, Islamic hygiene topics (Ghusl, etc), table matters.
7. Being taught without everything is Haram with no justifications or explanations
8. Learning to temper enthusiasm with knowledge and humility
9. Learning appropriate manners with: those who have different knowledge/follow different madh-habs, non-Muslims, non-Muslim family members, scholars, fellow Muslims
10. Learning to introduce Islamic practices into automatic behavior, such as saying Bismillah before putting food in the mouth, saying dua before common daily activities

Okay.... for those of you who don't know, Baba Ali wasn't following any religion before converting to Islam... He is Persian... from Iran. He accepted Islam at the age of 20. He is a Sunni.

Yes, but the point is not to "Label"....We are muslims. We don't have to label ourselves; if we are living according to the sunnah, that is being MUSLIM, not being Sunni. Al hamdulillah, I desire to follow the sunnah, but I will not divide into sects. I am one who submits to the will of Allah swt, and that's it. InshaAllah, I hope you don't take offense; I'm just trying to help my bros/sis' understand the harm in labeling.See the reaction of folks when one says he's Shia. Division already! Peace

2. How helpful do you find your musjid? Is it ethnocentric? Are they welcoming to all peoples? Do they give khutba in a different language?

3. How supportive is your family? Do you feel lonely sometimes? Do you have a network of close guy/girl friends to talk to (respectively for if you are a guy/girl)?

That's so true! Unfortunately, culture seems to dominate over religion any day in some households. People DO compromise their deen first.

and people should not be proud over something they had no control over... you don't deserve any credit.

In Islam there is no such thing as Sunni, Shia, Wahabi etc... There is only one group Muslims!

The people who follow the Qur'an and Sunnah.

Think abotu it, what was the Prophet? Sunni? Shia? No.

He was just Muslim.

Assalaam alaikum, TBM! Thanks for the reply; I understand what you're saying, but the fact that we are called Sunni is the act of labeling. Rather, it is better to say those who live according to the Qur'an and the Sunnah...The name "Sunni" is in itself the label, I hope I didn't offend you, bro or sis(didn't check profile 1st-sorry!). Anyway, I'm glad you are also striving to live by Al Qur'an and the Sunnah, al hamdulillah. InshaAllah, Allah will keep us guided on the Right Way. Ameen. <3
