Heroes at Home, a program sponsored by Sears and K-Mart, is a national program to repair homes owned by veterans. The program partnered with Christmas in October whose staff selected an 80-year-old WWII veteran to receive a new roof, rafter repair, new fascia, new gutters and shingles. The veteran, Gladin Harrison of the Ivanhoe Community in Kansas City, MO, also received another surprise from Christmas in October—a flag pole and the American flag for his front yard. On May 14, the flag was raised with members of the U.S. Army present and several members of a local VFW post. The media was out in force, with all three TV stations covering the event.
