Studio 8 production & records having created an important network has associated with a multi commercial genre album Kavithai Gundar (Lyrical Gangster) under the direction of Malaysian hip hop artist Emcee Jesz. Rising from the ashes of the 2006 Vallavan which was nominated for best non Malay album, Emcee Jesz has set off solo this time with his solid experience acquired internationally. Kavithai Gundar can be marked as the first international Tamil hip hop solo album to hit the mainstream international market after the trio album Vallavan, which sold more then 10,000 copies in Chicago, Toronto, India, Sri Lanka and Singapore. " Sara and Emcee Jesz believe in making a difference. In their eyes, KG stands for value, quality, innovation, fun and a sense of competitive challenge. "
They reviewed the industry and put themselves in the listeners shoes to see what could make it better and equivalent to International standards. Typically, when a new venture is started, it should be based on hard research and analysis but since KG is its first kind, Studio 8 production & records didnt have the luxury of laying hands on any data of previous records however despite this barrier, they have been able to give Tamil hip hop music a higher degree of significance.
The album contains 13 tracks featuring 12 artists including 3 award winning singers, Yogi B, Benny Dayal and Neha Bhasin with Malaysian rappers, Mista G, MC Loga and Pysho Mantra spicing up the flavour. A mix of urban hip hop, R&B hip hop, crunk, reggaeton, old school flavour, sentimental, patriotic and community songs are the alluring energy in this album.
Different styles of hip hop can be appreciated in KG. Bad Boy, a Tamil reggaeton song is a predicted blockbuster with its long shelf life anticipated to be partly on account of Madai Thiranthu, a party-oriented single whose appeal was so phenomenal that the song itself became synonymous with reggaeton (hip hop) in the minds of many who were unacquainted with the music style.
Thaniye featuring Neha Bhasin is a breathtaking Tamil hip hop R&B love track while KG also has one Tamil old school song, Nee Illammal Naana, expected to have an emotional impact on listeners. Look What Happened, is a special song that requires an expression of empathy. For children who are born everyday, contracting a fatal virus with no fault of their own. This Aids Awareness Song is for them.
The major challenge faced was preserving the originality of hip hop yet retaining the essence of Tamil to be sure that it did not cross borders and replicate American hip hop remixed with Tamil. To reinforce the glory of Tamil ethnicity and music, various instruments and themes that truly represent the Tamil culture were utilized. The ideal example in the album would be the song Vel Vel, singing praises of Lord Muruga. Yes, thats right, a rap song for our very own Tamil God, Lord Muruga. Sara has covered it all.
After the one-year long production followed by a six-month long post production, Sara states he is ecstatic about the sound quality of the songs. While some tracks were recorded in Malaysia and some in Chennai, the mixing and mastering of the album were done at Masterdisk Studios in New York. Amazingly, KG comes to us from the same studio as of Jay Z, Beyonce Knowles and other top hip hop artists hence the international standard of the mastered tracks are no surprise.
KG doesnt limit itself to youths but intends to influence a legion of followers. Sara recalls the awe he was in when he saw people from all walks of life savour a live show in Chennai by Emcee Jesz, Yogi B and Dr Burn. What turned out to be a shocking revelation for the team of Studio 8 production & records was the blend of young, middle aged and elderly at the show regardless of sex and status. Research in their own best possible ways further revealed that Tamil hip hop was fancied by people from different social backgrounds. Natives from villages, towns and interior parts of Tamil Nadu have been discovered to be huge fans of Tamil hip hop. " I see this more like an achievement and acclaim received by my album " -Sara
The music video was directed by N Manik, an immensely creative director with great visions. Outstanding cinematographic applause goes to Gavmic U Ary, making a record for Tamil hip hop video by using a professional Super 35 Camera, the worlds very first. And our recently Varanam Ayiram famed humble editor; Antony garnished KG with his editing talents. What make this video stand out are the delicate colour combinations, body language of the artists and the conception of the soundtrack. Studio 8 production & records creative team is very confident the song will be a trendsetter in the Tamil music video scenario.
