Episcopal priest, Matthew Moretz, returns home to Augusta, Georgia to his home church, the Church of the Good Shepherd. He talks about the grounds and the people, meets the rector, and wraps up with a meditation on sheep. "Father Matthew Presents" is an Episcopal priest's video blog that happens all the time. www.fathermatthewpresents.com

I'm curious as to why christians cling onto the shepherd/sheep analogy. In any other context, being called a sheep is always taken as an insult (an unthinking follower).
Then there's the matter of the shepherd. A shepherd doesn't care for and protect his flock for altruistic reasons at all. For the shepherd, the flock exists solely for profit.
I've called the shepherd/sheep thing the longest running joke in history. But seriously, is there another reason why christians keep using it?

I feel I know you as a kid with that sheep story. I worked for a period of time on Catholic grounds helping autistic children or children with autism.
I still remember the 4 young men who came to help out as volunteers who were going into the priesthood. They were good men.

The song your are talking about it is by Sufjan Stevens off his album Come on and Feel the Illinoise. The whole album is great, I highly recommend it.

The U.S. South can be really hard on gay folks and people of color. Are you ambivalent about those aspects of Southern ecclesial life?

What a beautiful church. I wonder what the song that ran for the majority of the video, particularly in the middle was; it's excellent.
