Celebrating 100 years of women's participation in the Olympic Games, former Australian women Olympic champions: Betty Cuthbert and Raelene Boyle, Dawn Fraser, Shirley Strickland (later Shirley Strickland de la Hunty), Shane Gould and Debbie Flintoff-King brought the torch through the stadium, handing it over to Cathy Freeman, who lit the flame in the cauldron within a circle of fire

  • Just brilliant! The only other one that came close was Barcelona when the archer fired the flaming arrow.

  • Dawnie.......Balmain girl!!

  • the torch failed

  • @HTownCountryFan - He didn't notice that it was a GIANT SPLIFF, probably rolled by Zeus Himself. I thought it was fine.

  • I remember Bob Costas talking about the evolution of the torch lighting after Freeman lit it, "The organizers of Athens, Greece have got to be thinking, First, Rebello with the flaming arrow (Barcelona 1992), Muhammad Ali (Atlanta 1996), and now this? We have four years but what can we come up with? They had an ugly cauldron in Athens. Just this huge hydraulic cigar that made me wonder 'Zeus is rolling in his tomb'.
