I don't understand how using the thumb to play some of these chords is more beneficial than barring all the frets in this song since the 5th string doesn't seem to get played. I understand that some situations the thumb helps a lot but I find it 10x easier to play this little chord pattern without using my thumb.

The trick is to sit in front of the TV for a month making you thumb go back and forth between the basses. Then come back and try this. The thumb must be on auto pilot. Anything else and it is not going to happen.

@trussek I am learning by just playing the bass notes with the higher notes he hits at the same time as the bass notes. So listen for those. Once you have that down listen for the notes in between.
