People would start panicking and all of our foreign debtors like China would start dumping US bonds and before you know it we're in another great depression and our yearly interest on the debt would overshadow our ability to pay it back and all sorts of other bad shit.

@Unclesamslair this is what happened to Bear Stearns. They were doing just fine, they had $18 billion in reserve. But then rumors started floating around that they were having liquidity problems and boom, nobody wanted to even touch them. Everybody started pulling out their money and all of a sudden the panic caused by a false rumor became the reality and Bear Stearns was having trouble just staying alive. Imagine what would happen if our press secretary had said anything to even hint that our

the reason for that, you idiot, is that the economy is dependent on human psychology. If people don't believe that the economy is good even if it is perfectly fine, they will stop spending, buying, investing etc. Our perception of the economy directly affects the economy, that's why a public official can't just say the economy sucks, because it could have a negative effect on the economy.

Here in The Netherlands we sometimes criticize our government, but watching this makes me so happy to live here. She wouldn't even give a straight answer to such a basic question... Poor Americans, and i mean that.
