Could you explain what makes a calligraphy or painting a masterpiece. Is it the name & fame or a certain quality? And what should be the quality then ? Or would mastery over oneself be mastery in any kind of art?

In our Chinese culture, we consider an "eternal" masterpiece if the work can be preserved, learned, copied, emulated, studied, analyzed "perpetually" thoughout the generations even if we developed new or modern styles.
Paintings of Fan Kuan and calligraphy of Wang Xizhi and Mi Fu have been considered historical or eternal masterpieces. You may find them on Google.
