The promise of free food, music, and information about student organizations lured students to the Founder's Plaza on Thursday. For the third consecutive year, PUC began the academic year with the Student Convocation.

Thursday's event started as Chancellor Howard Cohen used a food metaphor to encourage students to experience the wide variety of things PUC has to offer instead of settling for the things with which the students are comfortable.

Following Cohen was SGA President David Ober, who compared the signing of the Treaty of Paris to the experience students feel as they start college, and compared the student's journey to a metaphor used in Robert Frost's "The Road Not Taken."
Richard Rupp, the acting head for the History and Political Science Department, led a panel of eight to talk about their experience with PUC.

Associate Professor Janet Tazbir talked about how she takes her experience of being a student at PUC and uses it when she teaches.

"When you come into my classroom, I hope you walk away with some knowledge, but I hope you walk away with a little bit of me," said Tazbir. "We're here because of [the students]."

Mindy Dalgarn, the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, said the Student Convocation provides a wonderful mix of the many things that are offered at PUC.
The Convocation also provided a platform for student organizations to promote themselves.

Jeremy Musch, a member of the Chemistry Club says the Student Convocation brings more awareness to the club than any of the club-sponsored activities. Pieces of dry ice sat on the Chemistry Club table for students to look at.

Natalie Mora, the Los Latinos President also said the Convocation helps her organization.

"It gives Los Latinos a chance to get out there and let students know that this organization is here," said Mora, a junior in visual communications.

Jonathan Montalvo, a senior in Spanish international studies, talked about coming from Puerto Rico five years ago, with no ability to speak English, and credited PUC with helping him learn the language.
Like last year, White Dove provided reggae music for students, including covers of Bob Marley songs.

Herbkoe Fun Foods and Chartwells provided the wide arrange of food and drinks including hamburgers, snowcones, fudge puppies, pretzels and fruit shake-ups.
For the second year, a horse was displayed outside of the Porter building to promote the Equine Management major.
