Seems to me getting the pencil out the next day might be problamatic. You still have the gap the pencil leaves to fill in. Not for me, but I am not a newbie to drywall.
A better way is to use a shim or small piece of wood with a small hole in the middle of for a string. Tie a knot in the string and feed it through the peice of wood. Then feed the wood through the hole in the wall, and use the string to hold it tight against the drywall. Now screw the wood in place with drywall screws. Now you have something the screw you patch drywall to, and something to keep it flush with the existing drywall. Now plaster, sand and paint.
Painters stripped some screws on some bathroom fixtures held in place with heavy wall anchors. While attempting to fix the loose fixture I ended up creating a small hole (big enough to require a patch). Using your method, is it possible to install bathroom hardware where a hole like this has been patched?

Looks like a pretty ingenious way to repair a wall. I bet it takes a little practice though . Coudld you use a large paper clip as the " handle "?
