Sure, turning off lights, adjusting the thermostat, and driving less, will help conserve energy, but it won't make any kind of significant dent in CO2 levels. The Mount St. Helens eruption alone put more CO2 into the atmosphere then the entire auto industry since its inception.
Add to this that we're currently in a 10-year cooling trend, I don't think this issue should be anywhere near our top list of priorities.
