So, I decided to take a look at all the separate channels of some chiptune music at once. Thought it might look cool, since those waveforms are usually so pretty. I quickly put together a script to create this and other videos.

This time, I decided to try a different platform, so I picked the Nintendo Entertainment System.

If you're watching this, it probably means Rob Hubbard needs no introduction to you. So I'll just explain what's going on.

The fifth channel you see down there is a very primitive form of digital audio called "delta modulation". Interesting stuff, but very limited.

  • So... how to put those in midi (especialy atari SAP files) ... or convert it to module convertable to midi? Do you have any software or hardware idea?

  • @itrabos NSF and SAP files are ripped. They contain program code, not just audio instructions for their respective chips. You'd have to port the application, or do what I did and get some chip instruction output for the song and use that to convert to something usable.

  • @DE7ChainedDoor The triangle wave is doing a "Dah doo doo Dah doo doo Dah Dah" ostenato rhythm. Also you can tell that the bass is in a square wave if you notice that one of the square waves is much wider than the rest of the waves.

  • Is it me, or was the triangle wave used in an instrumet that was not bass?

    Finding the bass somewhat POKEY-ish.

  • I actually really like the lofi sound quality people get by having delta-modulation drum samples in nes songs.
