Sioux Falls Public Works requests your help in reducing the chances of creating sanitary sewer backups in your neighborhood by making sure that your sump pump discharge line is not connected to your floor drain.

The recent rain events have caused saturated soils in many neighborhoods, resulting in increased sump pump usage. At no time should your sump pump discharge into a sanitary sewer system such as your floor drain. This can cause sewer backups in your home or your neighbors' homes.

We ask that people be sure to discharge their sump pump water outside of their home. This can be accomplished by placing your discharge hose on your lawn and directing it away from your home, to a storm drain, to a sump pump collection system, or a natural outlet.
