Life in Kenyan slums is very harsh. There is lack of limited basic human needs e.g. food, clothes, shelter and education. The most affected groups are woman and especially children. Children are vulnerable because of different reasons. Some are orphans or street children; others are just living with a single parent or whose parents are sick. Even children are mistreated by their next of kin.
Upendo Rescue Centre (upendo means "love" in Kiswahili) is situated on a small patch of land on the edge of Nairobi's Mukuru slum. It is a Primary school for orphans and underprivileged children in the slum. Around 300 of the slum's most disadvantaged children gather here for the education they otherwise would never have received. Many are orphaned; others just desperately poor. The children find at Upendo Rescue Center not only free education but also an alternative to crime and violence as well as positive adult role models.
The curriculum parallels that of the state schools. Should the children find a way to raise the money for high school, they will be prepared for the entrance exam. If not, Upendo Rescue Center will help to place them in a vocational school.
Upendo Rescue Centre manages to operate on an extremely low budget. True fundraising is difficult. Every little counts...
