That's why I deleted my Facebook. It's just people begging for attention. No thanks

i think that this is an evolutionary thing, because male are choosy over mate selection based on appearance and females , less. truthfully, i think males do post less pictures.

Many will react negatively on this research. Many are those women who are in denial of their attention seeking behavior on line. Or I'd rather say many are those who are not aware of their intrinsic worthlessness. Facebook is a defense mechanism to shadow some of our immaturity.

I think there's not much difference.. Both men and women become some victims in social network. It makes them sick to share everything. And amount of friends makes me laugh.

No one can conclude anything about sex with respect to this study because the number of respondents is too small. All that can be said is something like X% of persons who said they post pictures to Facebook do so for attention.
Stefanone did not get enough respondents to breakdown results by sex. He would need on the order of 712 respondents to break down by male and female.
There is more pernicious foolery being spread by junk science than ever before. Stefanone's study is a giant fail.

silly women - no sense of reserve

....so the study found that pretty girls are superficial. Mind=Blown.

i believe the study. don't have an account at all and it's funny how when asked about why i don't have one i always respond that i don't have time to stare at people all day. especially people i already know and i know how they look. my friends really do need some attention badly. not only do they post like crazy to facebook but they also send the same pictures to me via email as well. i had to tell them all to stop it and start deleting. i'm a female but i guess i'm the contrary one. lol.

"[I]t is disappointing to me that in the year 2011 so many young women continue to assert their self worth via their physical appearance — in this case, by posting photos of themselves on Facebook as a form of advertisement. Perhaps this reflects the distorted value pegged to women’s looks throughout the popular culture and in reality programming from ‘The Bachelor’ to ‘Keeping Up with the Kardashians.’ - Stefanone quote from a press interview. Apparently reality TV is to blame for instinct.

Interesting stuff. Didn't take me very long to at least notice a correlation either. Real world social behaviour that we all saw taking place in high school etc. imported online.
I agree with the professor's analysis. Tried FB for two weeks and it became obvious that most (not all) of my female friends were posting endless pictures and minute-to-minute details of their lives. Not to mention a very obvious social heirarchy and where each 'friend' belonged on the proverbial social ladder.
Besides critical privacy issues, FB is not for those who are secure in themselves - which I believe comes with maturity- and is very rare in modern times.

@hay1337 even "the obvious" needs to be backed by empirical research before we can claim its really what "the world knows"! so Stefanone is doing a great job.
