@crestfallen - the only acceptable definition of music for me is 'Humanly organised sound'. So you can do what you want with any form of sound/noise/instrument that you want. Even better, somebody will have probably developed a form of notation for it! Check out some musique concrète for starters, then use your imagination as to why we have the musical styles and sounds that we have today.

You know, everyday ambiance does inspire musicians and artists in general, even if it is a "vacuum cleaner" (note, look up the Roland Alpha Juno's Hoover sound), or even a "power drill" (any sort of distorted bassline, or guitar even, really). You'd be dumb not to realize that the sound waves of everyday life is in fact art itself.
