Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) have launched this short film to highlight the Emergency SMS text service that it offers for people who are deaf or speech-impaired.
Produced by KFRS staff and starring deaf students from the Maplesden Noakes School, Maidstone, the short film shows the pupils discovering a fire in their school. The students, who know how to use the system, start their text with the word 'rescue' and follow it with describing the problem and their location to the number 60066. The text is then channelled to fire control operators who reply to tell them that help is on the way.
Fire Control Manager Leanne McMahon said: "We know all too well that access to the emergency services can be a matter of life and death. Deaf or speech-impaired people who find themselves in a crisis situation may be unable to dial 999 and instead may have to rely on someone else to make the call for them. This is a real barrier for the thousands of deaf or speech-impaired people in Kent, but quick and easy access to the emergency services is available! We've transformed the way you can ask for help in an emergency by developing the 999 text service."
