  • your definition is wrong as rocket's do not need to achieve a velocity of 7miles/second. The escape velocity is the initial speed of a "unpowered" body to escape a gravitational field where no additional kinetic energy is added. Essentially you could escape the gravitational field at a constant of 1m/s it would just take a while.
