Space Spiral at Cedar Point 1965-2012

This is the Space Spiral observation tower at Cedar Point in Sandusky, OH. It's a Gyro observation tower that was built by Willie Buhler's Space Tower Company with the passenger cabin from the Von Roll company in 1965. The tower itself is 330ft/100m tall but the passenger cabin rises to the 285ft level. This ride holds the distinction of being the first amusement ride in the world to top the 300ft mark. This ride closed on August 14, 2012 and was demolished using explosives that were placed in strategic locations at the base of the tower to allow it to fall over on the beach and the area that was occupied by the Disaster Transport roller coaster. This ride along with the Disaster Transport bobsled coaster (in the building with the "12E" on it) was removed in order to make way for a new project which will be the longest, tallest, and fastest Winged coaster from B&M called the Gatekeeper.

@cpcrazy2010 Sorry, I didn't realize you were responding to someone else's comment. I actually did here from one of the ride managers there that working 16 hour days weren't uncommon there when they're understaffed or someone calls in sick.

@cpcrazy2010 I don't think it was bad, I just think CP didn't want to spend the extra money upgrading the cabin to include air-conditioning. But who knows, they may have had no other choice but to tear it down due to its age, maintenance, and/or the Gatekeeper construction.

@CAZZERNERY No it wasn't. The Blue Streak was built a year earlier in 1964.

@Hieagandaus I understand DT being removed but I really hope they can work around the Space Spiral. This ride was the worlds first amusement type ride to break the 300 ft mark in height.

@nellet1950 It depends on which SeaWorld you're talking about. The one at SeaWorld Orlando was built in the 70's which would make the Space Spiral it's older brother as it was built in the 60's. I just wish they'd have upgraded their cabin and added a much quieter airconditioning/heating system.
