The town of Port Gibson, Mississippi is in need of your help. Declared "too beautiful to burn" by Ulysses S. Grant during the notoriously destructive Vicksburg Campaign of 1863, Port Gibson has become one of the most historically significant towns in the South. Now, a highway expansion project and almost twenty years of indecision and infighting threaten to transform Church Street, a lovely, tree-lined avenue, into a major interstate. Meet a few locals determined to save this national treasure.

Help unite the community around an Eastern bypass!

  • My greatx3 grandfather was injured and captured by the Union Army in the Battle of Port Gibson, I would love to go visit it one day. I hope they doing ruin this beautiful place.

  • Is there still time to sign the petition? Is there a link?

  • being that i am from claiborne county, i think that port gibson is more valuable than many know. it has stayed behind the times because of this.

  • Build the bypass! Church Street and all of downtown Port Gibson are a treasure.

  • Well, just do SOMETHING! This argument has been going on for 20 years, and the traffic on Church Street isn'y getting any lighter. If Mayor Reeves predecessor hadn't been such a stinking crook, a bypass might have been started by now.
