Aberystwyth University Intelligent Robotics Group presents you Pinta - the Autonomous Sailing Robot. Pinta is a modified Topper Taz sailing dingy, fitted out to be computer controllable. The control system runs on a gumstix computer and PIC microcontroller and uses GPS, compass, wind and battery sensors help it sail to a series of GPS waypoints. It was designed for the Microtransat Challenge - a transatlantic race of fully autonomous sailing boats. The race aims to stimulate the development of autonomous sailing boats through friendly competition. The race started from Valentia, County Kerry, Ireland in September 2010. The finish line is along the line of 60 degrees West, between 10 and 25 degrees North. Each team must designate a 50km wide point centred on this line which they are aiming for. Visit www.microtransat.org to track Pinta's progress.
