Play to Learn

Play To Learn is an educational game series that addresses the chronic problem of illiteracy in India at the grass-root level and promotes learning through non-formal education for primary-school aged children who do not have access to schools. The learning objectives of these games would be basic life skills that these children need to not only survive daily life in their communities but to accelerate onto higher levels of achievement and learning. For example, skills like reading the time, using money, measuring, etc. are formal skills that can be gained by playing these games.
Children can reproduce the games at any time and place with materials easily available to them in their surroundings (like seeds and shells), thus eliminating the need of spending money to learn. These games then become recipes that children can share with their friends. Alternatively, teachers in the local schools of rural India can use these games as teaching aids to make learning in the classroom spontaneous and fun. All aspects of the game are communicated with visual language alone (as opposed to written language) so that children with any level of reading and writing proficiency can use them successfully.
Initially, the series, printed on low-cost cloth bags (to make them portable and multi-functional), will be distributed in a variety of low-income Indian communities to introduce the games and their instructions to the children. The ultimate dream is that they will become a part of the lives of the children and hopefully, their children in the future, therefore making this solution sustainable and long-term.
